In the Old Testament, offerings were said to be a soothing aroma to God.
The phrase, “an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD,” is said over twenty times in Scripture.
The aroma signified atonement and reconciliation; and the fragrance of propitiation was pleasing to God.
In the New Testament, the ultimate sacrifice is revealed – Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us as an offering to God for a sweet-smelling savour. (Ephesians 5:2)
God was greatly pleased in the fragrance of redemption available through Jesus’ sacrifice.
And then, to those who are in Christ, our life becomes an offering made by the fire of the Holy Spirit, and becomes a sweet aroma before God.
We are able to manifest the same pleasing aroma of Christ wherever we go. In Him, we become unto God the sweet fragrance of His Son.
In Christ, we are a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God; and through us God diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. (2 Corinthians 2:14)
