Judgment fell on Sodom. Brimstone and fire rained and they were destroyed because the outcry against them had grown great before the face of the Lord.
But what was their sin?
We are told in Ezekiel 16:49-50
- pride (arrogance)
- fullness of food (satisfaction, satiety, one’s full, overindulgence, excess, being fed or gratified to or beyond capacity)
- abundance of idleness (prosperity, quietness, ease, tranquil rest, being undisturbed)
- they didn’t strengthen the hand of the poor and needy
- they were haughty (arrogant)
- they committed abominations before God (disgusting things)
Doesn’t that sound like most of us in America?
Pride is deceptive. It prevents us from returning to the Lord or seeking Him. Being prideful sets the Lord against us. It hardens our mind and our heart to be like uncultivated, fallow ground – making life and growth difficult.
God cannot use the proud. It hinders the fullness of His Spirit. He’s in search of the humble.
I feel the Lord calling me to sit before His holiness and pray for Him to burn away all pride, arrogance, and haughtiness of heart; and then to fill that space with more of Him.
There’s more pride inside of us than we realize.
It’s time to break up the fallow ground of our hearts.
For thus says the Lord …”Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns.” (Jeremiah 4:3)
Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till He comes and rains righteousness on you. (Hosea 10:12)
