Restraint

Scriptural wisdom in showing restraint in the words we say:

– Proverbs 29:11 A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.

– Proverbs 15:28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

– Proverbs 13:3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

– Psalms 141:3 Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.

– Psalm 39:1 I said, “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle.”

– Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

– Proverbs 17:27 He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

– Proverbs 21:23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

– Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.

– Proverbs 29:20 Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

– Micah 7:5 …guard the doors of your mouth

– Psalms 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.

– James 1:19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

– James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

– James 3:2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

– Matthew 12:36-37 “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

– 1 Peter 3:10 For “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.

– James 3:5-10 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
