Idols on the Walls

Don’t think this message isn’t for you. It’s for every one of us.

First, a quick look at a vision found in Ezekiel 8:5-12.

The hand of the LORD fell upon Ezekiel. The Spirit lifted him between earth and heaven and gave him visions of God.

At the door of the inner court, where the glory of God was, Ezekiel saw great abominations being committed that make the LORD go far away from His sanctuary.

Going deeper still, he was instructed to dig in a hole in the wall to a door. Once inside the door, he saw great abominations being done. “Every sort of creeping thing, abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed all around on the walls.”

Things done in the dark.

“Every man in the room of his idols. For they say, ‘The LORD does not see us.'”

Christians, we are the temple of God. The new covenant has moved the external to the internal. The Most High King dwells in our courts: our body, our soul (thoughts, will, and emotions), and our spirit.

How clean are your courts?

Do you have any creeping things or abominable beasts there? Anything that defiles what the blood of Christ was shed to redeem?

Are there things done in the dark crevices of your inner man that cause the LORD to go far from His sanctuary?

If you were to dig deep into your inner chambers, would you find a room of idols on the walls?

It’s not just about obvious sin. There’s a deeper cleansing that needs to be done.

Dig into the walls. Uncover the deep inner chambers. Let in light. Expose the abominations, creeping things, and idols on the walls.

This takes time in God’s presence. Time in His Word. And, most importantly, time with His Word in you.

Honesty. Transparency. Surrender.

Don’t be deceived – He sees in the dark. Nothing is hidden from His knowing. (Hebrews 4:13)

Lay your inner man uncovered in His sight. Allow Him to cleanse. Let His light bring life, repentance, and deliverance.

You may think you have no idols. Ask yourself: Where do your anxious thoughts go? Where does your time and money go? What has the ability to hurt you? Where do you go for comfort or escape? What makes you mad? What do you cling to? Where is your focus? What are your pursuits? What defines you?

Often these answers will expose the things that are out of alignment in your life. Even good things can be idols on our walls.

Christians, our King is coming back soon for a holy, glorious, radiant bride without blemish, spot, or wrinkle. Refined, sanctified, cleansed, and prepared. Don’t stop short of the cleansing His Spirit wants to accomplish in yours. Make it of upmost importance to cleanse the walls of your inner chambers.

Deliberate, focused, prayerful digging, exposing, and renewal.

Let’s prepare a fit sanctuary for our LORD. One He’s pleased to dwell in.
